Dr. Ajit Kumar Bhagowati

Doyen of the poultry industry in North Eastern India, Dr. Ajit Kumar Bhagowati passed away in Jorhat on 21st October.

A legend of the industry, Dr. Bhagowati was passionate about poultry and the development of the sector in the North East. As Founding President of Eastern India Poultry Development Forum, he put in relentless efforts to promote poultry farming in the region. He was also instrumental in creating the first poultry expo of the North East at Guwahati in 2019.

Born on 1st January 1956, Dr. Bhagowati had an illustrious career in Central Government service and academia before taking voluntary retirement and turning entrepreneur. Under his stewardship, Bhagowati Group of Industries grew to have interests in poultry farming, hatchery and feed manufacturing.

A recipient of several State and National awards, Dr. Bhagowati had three books and numerous publications in reputed journals to his credit. He has also guided Ph.D students.

An easily accessible and warm personality, Dr. Bhagowati was a true mentor to the industry and always eager to extend all possible help and advice.

At an online memorial meeting organised by West Bengal Poultry Federation, stalwarts of the industry and his close associates – Madan Mohan Maity, Sameer Agarwal, Amit Saraogi, T. Srinithi, Tejvinder Singh Chattha, Sumit Ghosh, Tapan Ghosh, Gautam Bhadra, Niren Das, Dr. Hemen Bharali, Dr. B. C. Dutta and Udaynanda Das spoke about Dr. Bhagowati’s immense contribution to the poultry industry.

Dr. Bhagowati is survived by his wife, son, daughter, son-in-law and grand daughter.
